Vw Vin Number Decoder

by Josh Rodgers

VIN Decoding:

  1. 2003 Volkswagen V.I.N. Decode r Country of origin Manufacturer Vehicle type Series Engine Restraint system Series' 'Check digit Model year Assembly plant 51617 Model (position 7&8) Sequential serial number (position 12 - 17) This is the sequential production number.
  2. Although VW adopted the standardized 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number in 1981, Volkswagen VIN decoding before this era is different. For example, decoding a VW VIN for the 1965 Bus would begin with the first two digits, which reveals the model number, such as 23 for Kombis and 21 for Panelvans.
  3. These cases were VW engine cases that were sold from VW but never issued in an actual production vehicle. All are dual-relief cases with 100mm oil passages. Information from a 5/73 USA service bulletin issued 5/73: Engines with the re-manufactured symbol, a letter, a number and ending with X, indicates a VW Exchange engine.

For Sample VIN: 2-1-5-066378, we break it into four parts (A,B,C, and D).
'A' (2) being the Type of vehicle it is. Theabove example VIN is a Type 2.
'B' (1) is the second number or the Vehiclemodel type decoded below. The sample decodes to be a Panel Van.
'C' (5) is the second letter of the year ofmanufacturer. The sample being either a 1955, 1965, or 1975model.
'D' (066378) represents the last six digitsbeing the chassis number. In the example VIN this instance, thisvehicle's Chassis number is 66378.

This is achieved with a VIN decoder. Every vehicle manufacturer is obliged to mark each vehicle with a unique VIN number. A large amount of essential data is related to the VIN number and using Volkswagen Jetta VIN decoder the buyer can confirm the relevant details to enable making an informed buying decision and consider other potential options.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The above system is accurate for'65 thru '79 models. On earlier models, the only reliable method ordetermining year model is by the Model Manufacture or Chassisnumber.
